Report: St. Louis Blues to become Rampage NHL affiliate

The St. Louis Blues are expected to become the new parent club of the San Antonio Rampage beginning with the 2018-19 season.

According to The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Blues and Rampage will begin a five-year agreement next year and would end San Antonio’s relationship with their current affiliate, the Colorado Avalanche.

San Antonio began their affiliation agreement with the 2015-16 season and last season finished at the bottom of the AHL standings with a 27-42-7 record. If the affiliation between the two teams becomes official, the Rampage would have only been Colorado’s AHL affiliate for three seasons of their five year agreement.

The AHL will be expanding in the 2018-19 season and according to the Denver Post, the Avalanche are working to bring the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL to the AHL. This would make the Rampage available and St. Louis free to take over San Antonio.

The Rampage has been in the playoffs just four times in their 15 years in San Antonio. The 2014-15 campaign would be San Antonio’s best as they finished with a franchise best 98 points, but were swept by the now-defunct Oklahoma City Barons in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

St. Louis would be San Antonio’s fourth NHL parent club. The Rampage were the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers twice and the then-Phoenix Coyotes.

The Rampage will open the 2017-18 season on Saturday, October 7 at the AT&T Center at 7 p.m. against the Ontario Reign.
